Savegamesare compatible even when you buy the DLC years after. Land of Lions, The Passage and Sunken Treasures all add new maps, New World Rising expands the new world, so those are probably the most worthwhile. Btw. Anno 1800 is only 15€ here right now, and you can often get good discounts on cdkeys.
Andthe game introducing items for the union building/townhall that significantly change how production chains work makes it even more complex. This ended up just being a bit of a rant. Anno is my favourite game series overall, but Anno 1800 just leaves me feeling tired and frustrated. Edit: Lots of good tips and advice in here.

Items from Old Nate in the Arctic are very useful, especially the ones that reduce the consuption of Coffee or Chocolate.
